Cherry Hill was originally settled by Native Americans who coexisted peacefully with the first settlers from Britain, Quaker followers of William Penn who arrived in the late 1600s. The first settlement was a small cluster of homes named Colestown, and was later named Delaware. Motivation for the name change was a desire for the township to have its own post office since there were other places in New Jersey named Delaware, New Jersey.
